The high point of Lyubov Sadchikova’s career was at the 1978 World Sprint Championships in Lake Placid, where she won a gold medal just 0.180 points ahead of home ground favorite Beth Heiden. Before this victory, Sadchikova had finished seventh, fourth and fifth respectively at the 1973, 1974 and 1975 World Sprint Championships and would finish only 15th in 1979. Sadchikova set a new 500 metre world record of 41.69 on 21 March 1975 at the Soviet speed skating mecca of Medeo. She was only a disappointing sixth in the 500 at the 1976 Olympics. During her career she won five Soviet distance titles – in 500 m in 1975 and 1978 and in 1000 m in 1974, 1976 and 1977.
