Lucienne Schmith-Couttet

Lucienne Schmith-Couttet came to national prominence on the French alpine skiing scene in 1943, when she won the downhill, combined, and slalom. The latter was her specialty and she won additional titles in that event in 1944, 1946, and 1948. She then attended the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics, where she was 20th in the slalom and 10th in the downhill and combined (in the latter with her compatriot Suzanne Thiollière).

Schmith-Couttet had more international success at the World Championships, beginning in 1950 when she took bronze in the giant slalom behind Dagmar Rom and Trude Jochum-Beiser, both of Austria. Four years later, however, she captured the title and also took bronze in the downhill and the combined. She retired from active competition shortly thereafter and later worked as a ski instructor. Her cousin, James Couttet, was a two-time Olympic alpine skiing medalist.
