Brigitte Totschnig was at her best in the downhill, winning seven World Cup downhill races, and the seasonal World Cup downhill titles in 1975-76 and 1976-77. She recorded 13 World Cup race podiums, 11 of them in downhill, and in 1978 was Austrian Champion in downhill and combined. Her best year-end overall World Cup placing was fourth in the 1976-77 season.
She competed at two Winter Olympics, placing tied 15th in downhill in 1972 and winning a silver medal in downhill at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. She retired from ski racing in 1977 and in 1978 built the Aparthotel Olympia in Filzmoos which she ran as her career. Totschnig was Austrian Sportswoman of the Year in 1976 and in 1996 was given a silver medal for services to the Republic of Austria.
