Donna Weinbrecht started out as a figure skater, but the cost of coaching was prohibitive for her family, so she turned to skiing. Growing up in New Jersey she learned freestyle at Hidden Valley Ski Hill in Vernon Township. Weinbrecht’s moguls gold in 1992 was the first freestyle gold medal awarded at the Winter Olympics. She was moguls World Champion in 1991 and was a five-time winner World Cup season title on the moguls – 1990-92, 1994, and 1996. Her career was interrupted after her Olympic gold medal when she tore her ACL during the 1993 season. Weinbrecht started skiing at age seven, but also competed briefly in figure skating. After high school graduation she attended art school before devoting herself to her ski career.
