West German Nordic combined skier Günther Abel finished 14th and 20th respectively at the 1976 Innsbruck and 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games. From 1976-78 he won the silver medal at the West German national championships, behind team-mate Urban Hettich on each occasion. Abel later became a national Nordic combined coach at the Regional Olympic Centres in Winterberg and Willingen.
