Together with Hans-Joachim Menge he then placed second at the 1984 nationals and both qualified for the Sarajevo Olympics, where they placed 15th in doubles after a fall in the first run. One year later they both earned another bronze at the East German nationals.
Bertz later started a coaching career as a technical luge coach, but then worked with the Bundeswehr Social Service after German re-unification.
