Bob Blatt starting skiing near his native Seattle with his family, particularly his brother, John “Boots” Blatt, at Snowqualmie Pass. Bob Blatt attended Stanford, graduating in 1948. Boots also made the 1948 Winter Olympic team but did not compete. In 1938 Bob Blatt won the American Cup downhill and was second in the Pan-American slalom race. Blatt served in the Army in World War II, and in 1946, after hostilities had ended, he won the USFET (US Forces European Theatre) slalom championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
