Born in Rossland, British Columbia, it was only natural that Don Bruneski would become an adventurer. Living in the Monashee Mountains gave Bruneski the opportunity to ski, which ultimately led to him being selected for the Canadian Olympic team. At the 1960 Squaw Valley Games he competed in Alpine skiing, finishing 28th in the downhill and 22nd in the slalom. After the Olympics he moved into a new venture of delivering sports cars to Zimbabwe. Whilst travelling across Africa he met and married his wife Bridget. From here Bruneski began to learn celestial navigation and began an eight-year journey of sailing around the world with his wife and new son. They eventually returned to Canada to live on Vancouver Island.
