Biography

Thomas Byberg began his skating career in the 1930s, competing for the socalist skating federation and racing in the Worker’s Championships. A sprinter, he never qualified for major international allround tournaments, although he competed in the unofficial 1946 European Championships. Byberg was favoured for a 500 m medal in the 1948 Olympics; despite a start under poorer weather conditions, Byberg managed to get a silver medal, at just 0.1 seconds from the gold. Byberg never placed high in the Norwegian championships, but won the 500 m in the 1948 edition.

Personal Bests: 500 – 43.2 (1948); 1500 – 2:23.7 (1936); 5000 – 8:51.9 (1938); 10000 – 18:49.1 (1936).
