Biography
Josef Černý was one of Czechoslovakia’s greatest ever left wingers, with a long career that lasted from 1957-79. He played most of that in and around his native Brno, but started in 1957 with Spartak Plzeň for one season, before moving to RH Brno. He played with them through 1962 when he moved to TJ ZKL Brno, playing with them through 1976, before joining TJ Zetor Brno for two seasons. He finished his playing career with one season in the Austrian league with ATSE Graz. In his club career, he played on Czech League Champions seven times – 1960-66, and won three European Cup titles in 1966-68.
Černý’s international career was outstanding. He played at four Olympics, winning two bronze and one silver medals. He played at nine World Championships (1959, 1961, 1963, 1965-67, 1969-71), winning four silver medals (1961, 1965-66, 1971) and four bronze medals (1959, 1963, 1969-70). Černý was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
