A baseball player and hockey star at Harvard in the 20’s, John Chase also was quite a horseman. In 1926 he finished third in the Bronco Riding division of the World Rodeo Championships. But it was as a hockey player that he was best known. After captaining the Harvard team in his senior year, Chase turned down pro offers but continued to play as an amateur. He played in the next few years with the Boston AA, the Boston University Club, and the Brae Burn Hockey Club. In 1932 he captained the U.S. Olympic team as it won a silver medal. Chase later became a hockey coach, leading the Harvard Crimson from 1941 until 1951. But it was only an avocation for him; he had by then become a very successful investment counselor, a career which enabled him to set up his own company for which he became CEO and chairman of the board.
