Johnny Cookman prepared for college at Phillips Exeter and went from there to Yale. While at Yale he played on the hockey team, the football team, and the tennis team. After his 1931 graduation he was selected to play on the 1932 Olympic team. Cookman later went on to become chief executive officer of Philip Morris, Inc.
