John D’Arcy Coulson’s father, John Sr., was a professional ice hockey player who had one season in the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Quakers (1930-1931). D’Arcy was a survivor of polio in his youth, but was later able to play football in high school. He eventually turned to luging, however, where he found his greatest athletic success. His most notable appearance for Canada came in the singles event at the 1968 Grenoble Games, where he placed 47th. He also took part in the World Cup for that sport and, nationally, won the inaugural Canadian doubles title in 1967, alongside the non-Olympian Paul Levesque. During his luging career, Coulson was a priest, but he later worked as a social services administrator.
