Pietro Cunti

Pietro Cunti’s ice hockey career was nearly over before it began after getting into an argument with his coaches and almost quitting whilst playing as a junior for EHC Arosa. Thankfully for Cunti the club’s President convinced him not to quit and he remained with the team. With EHC Arosa he won two Swiss league championships (1980, 1982), before winning two more with SC Bern (1989, 1991). From 1979 to 1991 Cunti played 313 matches in the Swiss league, scoring 307 points.

In 1983 Cunti made his international début for the Swiss national team, scoring four goals in a match against Poland. After competing at the 1987 World Championships, he was then selected as part of the Swiss squad for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. At the Games he played in six matches and scored a goal in Switzerland’s 9–0 win against France. Cunti was only 28-years-old when he retired in 1991, and went to work in the family plastering business. His nephew Luca was also an ice hockey player, competing at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
