Descended from British aristocrats, Bruce Cunliffe fought in World War II, and became a professional soldier. But he used the GI Bill to attend Dartmouth College in 1947-48, returning to the military at the advent of the Korean War. Cunliffe served in both Korea and Vietnam, winning two Bronze Stars, one in each war. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the US Marine Corps. At the 1948 Winter Olympics, Cunliffe was a high-scoring forward, scoring 17 goals and 20 points in eight games. For Dartmouth, Cunliffe skated on a dominant line with Bruce Mather and Ralph Warburton. It was before there was an NCAA hockey championships, but Dartmouth had a 46-game winning streak, and was ranked #1 in the country for 1946 and 1947.
