Mike Devecka competed in both ski jumping and Nordic combined. He was US champion in the Nordic combined in 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1979, and US ski jumping champion on the large hill in 1978. Devecka attended Fort Lewis College, graduating in 1969 with a degree in history. He was elected to the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 1999. Devecka had a relationship with speed skater Dianne Holum, and had a daughter by her, Kirstin Holum, who was also on the US Olympic speed skating team in 1998.
