Tom Doe lived in Europe during the 1920s and was in St. Moritz in 1928. The U.S. had no bobsled runs at that time so a team was recruited among Americans in Europe and Doe was selected to participate, even though he was only 15 years old at the time. Tom Doe was the son of a former president of the Sperry Corporation. His father later took over the Vickers Corporation and it was this company that Tom Doe, Jr. eventually took over and made his life’s work. He retired to a dairy farm in Asheville, NC.
