A native of Arendal, Norway, John Ericksen settled in the United States, living in Wakefield, Massachusetts at the time of his Olympic participation. He worked as a carpenter and moved to the Jacksonville, Florida area in 1978. Ericksen was a member of the Cheshire (Mass) Upton Masonic Lodge, was made a Master of the Lodge in 1950, and was awarded the honorary degree of Knight of the York Cross of Honor, the highest award in the York Rite of Freemasonry.
