During his long active career, Hans Ertl played ice hockey in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Until 1933, he played for EK Engelmann and Pötzleinsdorfer SK in Wien. During the following years, he joined Züricher SC and SG Cortina. After the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938 he played for Berliner Schlittschuhclub and the German national team.
Ertl, a defender, represented Austria at the 1928 Winter Olympics, two separately held European Championships (1929, 1932) and two World Championships (1930, 1934), which were also counted as European Championships. At these events he played 19 games as a defender and scored five goals. Ertl concluded his career after World War II, in which he fought for Germany, as a player-coach for HC Crans-Montana in Switzerland in 1951.
