Frank Farrel attended Yale where he played on the hockey team for four years, but also played some soccer and lacrosse. The sports were suited to him for he played goalie at all three. Farrel never played professional hockey but instead spent several years with the St. Nicholas Hockey Club as their goalie. Frank Farrel eventually took over the family business, the Farrel Corporation. He became president of that company in 1955, after working his way up, and in 1969 became an executive vice president of the USM Corporation.
