Chicagoan John O’Neil Farrell won his only major championship in 1926, taking the International Outdoor Championship at pack style skating. Competing overseas only in 1928, he won a bronze medal in the Olympic 500 m in a three-way tie for third. Farrell continued to compete and was again selected for the 500m at the 1932 Olympics, where he reached the final. He returned for his third Olympics in 1936, as the coach of the US Olympic speed skating team. He later worked as a department manager at a Sears department store.
