Biography

Pyotr Zayev won his first medal at the Soviet Championships, a silver in heavyweight in 1973 and in all, Zayev won a Soviet heavyweight title (1980) and four silvers (1973, 1975-77) at the Soviet Championships. Zayev never competed at the World or European Championships. His only international tournament was the 1980 Olympic Games, where he lost in the final to the legendary Cuban boxer Teófilo Stevenson and had to settle for a silver medal. During and after his boxing career, Zayev served in the Soviet Army, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
