After a season with the Henry Carr Crusaders of the Metro Junior A Hockey League of Ontario, Pat Flatley entered the University of Wisconsin and won a National Collegiate Athletic Association championship with them in 1983. That same year, he took bronze with the Canadian team at the junior and senior editions of the World Championships. He was drafted by the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League in 1982, but stayed amateur long enough to compete at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, where Canada was fourth.
Thereafter, Flatley spent nearly his entire career with the Islanders, save for two games with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League during the 1988-89 season, and a final full season with the New York Rangers in 1996-97. His lengthy tenure with the Islanders earned him induction into their Hall of Fame in 2012, and he was also made a member of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
