A goalkeeper, Anton Jože Gale played hockey for Yugoslavia at the 1964, 1968, and 1972 Winter Olympics. He was on the Yugoslav national team from 1960-73, and was capped 112 times. Gale played at eight World Championships for the Yugoslav national team. At the club level he played his entire career with Olimpija. He was later signed by the New York Rangers of the NHL and played three pre-season games with the club. He never played a regular season game in the NHL but played one season in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) with the Syracuse Blazers and Clinton Comets. His career ended after an eye injury.
Gales later became a coach, working with the youth team of Olimpija and coaching the Slovenian goaltenders. In 2007 he was inducted into the Slovenian Hockey Hall of Fame.
