András Gergely and his older twin brother László came from a wealthy Jewish family who prospered in the food industry. At the age of 16, András began playing hockey with FTC as a left winger. He was a multiple Hungarian champion with FTC and later with BKE. He competed for Hungary at the 1936 Garmisch Winter Olympics and five World Championships. His greatest success came in 1934, when he won a bronze medal in the European Championships (at that time the World Championships were also a European Championship).
András Gergely was a good friend of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews in the 1940s. After the war, Gergely played for FTC in the 1945/1946 season and MTK for the next two seasons, then left the country and played for Kitzbühel for another season in Austria. He later emigrated to Chile, where he set up a wholesale and import business in Santiago, switched to golf, and took part in the World Senior Golf Championship.
