László Gergely and his twin brother András came from a wealthy Jewish family that prospered in the food industry. László was the elder, by half-an-hour. At the age of 16, László began playing hockey with FTC as a right winger. He was a multiple Hungarian champion with FTC and later with BKE. From 1935-38 he was on the Hungarian national team. He competed at two World Championships (1935, 1937) and at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Winter Olympics.
László Gergely was a good friend of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews in the 1940s. Gergely died of bile duct cancer at age 30.
