Never a national champion, Carmen Barth surprised the experts by easily winning the middleweight gold medal at Los Angeles. After the Games, he turned pro but had a rather checkered career. In 1942 he was called into the service by the Navy and never fought again professionally His final professional record was 17 wins, 2 draws, and 11 losses.
