German-born Austrian Herbert Gruber placed seventh with the four-men bob at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. He then won a silver medal in the four-men event at the 1968 Grenoble Games alongside Reingold Durnthaler, Erwin Thaler, and Josef Eder. Almost the same team, with Adolf Koxeder replacing Eder, had won a silver medal at the 1967 European Championships.
