Austrian cross-country skier Josl Gstrein performed with Josef Deutschmann, Engelbert Hundertpfund and Karl Rafreider in the 4x10 km relay at the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics, where they finished an unfortunate fourth. Individually, Gstrein finished 36th in the 18 km event and 12th over 50 km. He also finished 16th in the Nordic combined.
After the Nazi German “Anschluss”, Gstrein was forced to represent Germany and won a silver and a bronze medal at the 1941 World Championships in the military ski patrol and the Nordic combined.
Gstrein won the Austrian national title from 1947-49. He later became a mountain guide, ski instructor and hotelier. He led the skiing school at Obergurgl for several years until 1961. In 1980 he died in a hunting accident.
