The Swedes were heavily favored in the relay after their convincing clean sweep in the 18 km. race, although they had never won an international relay before. The three medal winners were on the team, while Nils Täpp replaced Nils Karlsson, who concentrated on the 50 km. Täpp had won a special relay selection race in St. Moritz.

The relay had little suspense. Nils Östensson gave Sweden a commanding lead on the first leg, almost two minutes ahead of Finland’s Lauri Silvennoinen. On Norway’s opening leg Erling Evensen had an accident with one of his skis and was only fourth at the first exchange, 13 seconds behind Austria, but Olav Økern was over two minutes faster than Austria’s Josef Deutschmann on the second leg and brought Norway into third place. After the second exchange the 11 competing teams held their positions, and on the final leg Martin Lundström easily brought Sweden another gold medal, almost nine minutes ahead of Finland, with Norway another 3:27 behind. Sweden’s winning margin is by far the greatest in the history of the Olympic cross-country skiing relay.
