Biography

Johann Baptist von Gudenus was an Austrian bobsleigh exponent and track & field athlete who participated in the 1932 Lake Placid and 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Winter Olympics. Together with Hugo Weinstengel he placed 12th and last in the two men bob in 1932 and came 13th with the four men bob in 1936.

In 1936, von Gudenus also participated in the Berlin Olympics in the 400 metres but was eliminated in the heats. He won ten Austrian titles in total: 200 metres (1932, 1934), 400 metres (1933, 1935, 1937-38), 4x100 metres relay (1931-33), and 4x400 metres relay (1933).

Von Gudenus came from a wealthy family from Hessia. In 1907 Emperor Franz Joseph elevated the family to the rank of Austrian count, but in 1919 von Gudenus lost his title by law. He belonged to the SA in the Third Reich and was listed in the 1941 edition of the Gotha Genealogical Paperback as Obersturmführer.

Personal Best: 400 – 49.5 (1936).
