Biography

All-round Norwegian sportsman Bjørn Oscar Gulbrandsen competed in football, bandy, ice hockey, and sailing. As a bandy player Gulbrandsen won national titles in 1952, 1953, and 1955, and earned three international caps for Norway. He excelled as an ice hockey player where he won the league title in 1947, in addition playing in 28 matches for the national team. In 1951 Gulbrandsen was part of the Norwegian team for the World Championships but suffered an injury after just five minutes on the ice in the opening game, which ruled him out of the rest of the tournament. The following year he had better luck when he played in six matches at the 1952 Oslo Olympics.

Gulbrandsen was also an excellent sailor who represented the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club. After competing at the Winter Olympics he was then selected to sail at the Summer Games in Melbourne in 1956. Along with compatriots Thor Thorvaldsen and Carl Otto Svae, he came seventh in the Dragon event. Gulbrandsen later emigrated to the Virgin Islands in the 1960s.
