Michael Güntner was an ice hockey defence playing at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics representing Austria. The team was eliminated in the group stage and finally placed 12th and last, after losing the match for 11th place to Norway 3-1. Güntner won 32 international caps and scored two (1+1) points.
At club level Güntner played with Kapfenberger SV, Innsbrucker EV, EC Graz, Frankfurt Lions, Wiener EV, HC Bolzano, Graz 99ers, EV Zeltweg, HC die 48er, EC Weit, ATSE Graz, and EHC Frohnleiten.
Güntner later became responsible for the technology and organisation of the three sports venues (Merkur Arena, Merkur Eistadion and SZ Weinzödl) in the stadium administration at Graz-Liebenau.
