Fred Feary moved to Stockton, California at the age of 12 and attended the local high school, fighting his first amateur bout in 1927. After an impressive string of wins he became AAU Heavyweight Champion in 1932 at Madison Square Garden. His professional career was relatively successful. In a short three-year career (1933-35), he won his first 14 fights, ending with 21 wins in 28 fights, all of them in California, mostly in his hometown of Stockton. He later became a policeman.
