Martin Hinterstocker, Sr. is a former ice hockey forward, who later became a coach and trainer. He started his career with Berliner SC, becoming German Champion in 1974 for the first time. In 1976 he played for the German national team at the Winter Olympics, winning the bronze medal. Hinterstocker was the top scorer in the Bundesliga in 1979. After playing in the 1978 and 1979 World Championships and the 1980 Winter Olympics, he moved to Düsseldorfer EG in 1982, but played with several other clubs before he finished his career in 1990.
In 1992 he became the coach at EV Füssen and was also a coach for several other smaller clubs. His brother Hermann, his sons Benjamin and Martin Jr. and his nephew Martin, III, also became ice hockey professionals. Martin Hinterstocker, Sr. himself was later inducted into the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
