Albert Guardado came to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics as a medal contender, having won bronze medals at the 1995 Pan American Games and the 1993 World Championships as a light-flyweight. In Atlanta he won two bouts but was then defeated in the quarter-finals. Guardado turned professional after the Olympics but fought for only two years. His record was 5 wins and 2 losses, and he retired after losing his last two bouts in 1998. He settled back near his native Topeka, Kansas, where he worked as a production manager for Combat Brands and Ringside Boxing.
