Aliann Pompey

Aliann Pompey was a 400 metre sprinter who represented Guyana at four Olympic Games, from 2000-2012. Born in Guyana she moved to the United States at age 14 and attended Manhattan College where she graduated with a degree in finance and communication in 1999, later also obtaining an MBA from Manhattan. Pompey won the 2000 NCAA title in the 400 metres.

Pompey won 400 metre gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and added a silver in that event in 2010. She won a bronze medal at the 2003 Pan American Games in the 400, and a silver medal in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. Pompey ran at five World Athletics Championships and four times at the World Indoor Championships.

After retiring from competition Pompey became an assistant coach at St. John’s University. In 2021 she was named head coach of St. John’s. She has also served as President of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission, beginning in that role in 2019.
