The 1965 Golden Gloves championship was the first breakthrough for young Al Jones, but he continued to win, later capturing the 1968 AAU title and winning the middleweight division of the Olympic trials. After a close loss in the semi-finals of the Olympics to eventual champion, Chris Finnegan of Britain, Jones turned professional. He won his first 12 fights but suffered a bad knockout in a fight against Dave Thach in 1971 and retired.
