Internationally Attene competed at two World Championships (1997 and 2001), while at the Sydney Games, after having performed very well in the quarterfinals with a mark of 45.35, at the time the second best all-time Italian performance by just 9/100ths of a second, he struggled in the semi-finals and failed to qualify for the final.
His best international performances were at the 2005 Mediterranean Games with gold in 4x100 relay and silver in the 200 metres with 20.97, a time 4/10ths of a second off his personal best (20.57). Attene worked as a mechanics expert and was passionate about computer science and photography.
