Biography

Samuel Lagonia represented the Bronxdale Athletic Club, winning the AAU title in 1919-21 as a middleweight. In 1919 Lagonia won three Metropolitan AAU titles in the same night, winning bouts as a middleweight, light-heavy, and heavyweight. At the 1920 Olympics, Lagonia was considered a medal favorite, but had the misfortune to meet Britain’s redoubtable Harry Mallin in the quarter-finals, and Mallin eliminated Lagonia. After his 1921 AAU title, Lagonia turned professional but had a short career. He won four bouts, two by knockout, and never lost, but there is no record of him fighting after October 1921.
