Louis Laurie was not well-known at all as an amateur fighter in 1936. Although he finished only third in the flyweight class, he won the Val Barker Trophy as the best technical boxer at the Olympics. Laurie was one of five athletes from Cleveland’s East Technical High School to compete at the 1936 Olympics, among them Jesse Owens. He has a brief career as a professional boxer, but quit after only eight fights. He worked as a machinist. In 1984 he was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame and in 1988, to the Ohio State Boxing Hall of Fame.
