Biography

A back-up goalie for the Swedish national team behind Kjell Svensson in the early 1960s, Lennart Häggroth played a superb tournament at the 1962 World Championships, when the Swedes won the World title for the third time. Svensson was injured before the tournament, and Häggroth had to fill his shoes. Häggroth’s goaltending was instrumental in Sweden’s title and he was named the best goalie of the 1962 World Championships. Häggroth also competed at the 1963 World Championships and 1964 Olympics, winning a silver at both tournaments. He was a European champion in 1962, while taking silvers at the 1963 and 1964 European Championships. In all he was capped 65 times with the Swedish national team between 1960-65. At the club level, Häggroth played with Kiruna AIF from 1954-61 and 1966-68, Skellefteå AIK from 1961-66 and Clemensnäs from 1969-73. He never won a Swedish title. He was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #65 in ice hockey. After finishing his sporting career, Häggroth worked as a social worker, especially with drug addicts and alcoholics.
