Hymie Miller won the 1928 AAU flyweight championship. At the Amsterdam Olympics, he thought he was an easy winner in round one over Marcel Sartos of Belgium, but Sartos was given the decision. The US boxing officials were outraged and wanted to withdraw from the tournament in protest, but permission for this was denied by USOC President Major-General Douglas MacArthur, who stated, “Americans never quit.” Miller was one of three boxing brothers, along with Abie and Benny Miller.
After the Olympics Hymie Miller fought as a pro from 1929-31, and fought a lot, almost exclusively in the Los Angeles area. He finished his short career with a professional record of 28 wins, 5 losses, and 6 draws, and never managed a shot at a major title.
