Biography

László Jakabházy began his sports career in 1952 as a field hockey and ice hockey player for Bp. Építők. In field hockey he won Hungarian championships in 1960 and 1962, but his greatest successes came as an ice hockey player for FTC (Ferencváros). As a player Jakabházy won three national championships, and as a coach he led the Ferencváros team to five championship titles.

Between 1962 and 1965 he played 16 times for the Hungarian national team, participating in three World Championships and one Olympic Games during that period. After retiring as a player Jakabházy played an active role in founding the ice hockey division of KSI (Central Sports School). In 1971 he became the head coach of FTC, achieving not only five championship titles but also four Hungarian Cup victories.

Jakabházy first coached the Hungarian national team between 1969 and 1971, and was appointed head coach three more times (1973–1975, 1979–1981, and 1987–1988). Until his retirement he taught at the College of Physical Education.

Jakabházy held a doctorate in sports and in 1971 graduated as a master ice hockey coach from the prestigious Charles University in Praha, which was one of the strongholds of ice hockey. In addition he had earlier completed teacher training at the College of Physical Education and earned a degree in psychology from the Faculty of Humanities at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). He was inducted into the Hungarian Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
