Biography

Hungarian sportsman József Kertész was a good footballer who played for the junior national team but preferred to play ice hockey instead. In 1956 Kertész joined Budapesti Vasutas Sport Club and remained at the club until 1971. Although he never won the league whilst at the team, they finished runners-up in 1965 and third on four occasions (1964, 1966, 1968, 1969). Between 1958 and 1966 he played in 46 matches for the Hungarian national team, including several editions of the World Championships and the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics. Kertész retired in 1971 and later worked as a coach at both his former club and the national side. He was inducted into the Hungarian Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.
