Biography

Swiss ice hockey goaltender René Kiener was a mainstay at SC Bern and played at the club for his whole career. Kiener joined the team in 1955, winning his first Swiss championship in 1959, followed by another in 1965. He also played for the national team for the best part of a decade, including competing at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics. He only played in two matches at the Games, however, sharing the goalkeeping duties with teammate Gérald Rigolet. Despite being a good player Kiener had to retire in 1972 after battling alcohol addiction.
