Sammy Vogel was one of six children born to Polish-Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side of New York. He fought for the Pastime Athletic Club as an amateur. He turned professional shortly after the 1920 Olympics, winning his first bout against Hilly Levine in October 1920. Vogel fought through 1928, winning 43 bouts (11 by KO), losing 15, with 3 draws. Vogel was called “the pocket edition of Benny Leonard” by Ring Magazine, but he never fought for any major titles, although in December 1923 he defeated future world champion Jimmy Goodrich in a 10-round decision. Vogel later became a local union organizer in New York.
