Vladimir Komarov was active as a sprinter in the early 1970s, specializing in the 500 m. During that period, the ISU started organizing World Sprint Championships, and Komarov took part in the second unofficial version (1971) as well as the first two official versions (1972-73). His best performance was a 7th place in 1973. In national competition, he was a runner up at the Soviet Sprint Championships of 1972 and 1973, both times behind Valery Muratov.
Komarov qualified for the Olympic 500 m in Sapporo, where he placed 14th. After his active career, he graduated in physical education. As a speed skating coach, he led the Moscow team. He then became an administrator with the Russian Skating Union, serving as president (1994-2009) and vice-president (2009-10). Komarov was married to Nataliya Petrusyova, one of the top female speed skaters in the early 1980s and Olympic gold medallist in the 1,000 m (Lake Placid).
