An ice hockey forward with EV Füssen (1959 – 1966 and 1985), Ernst “Gori” Köpf, Sr. played at the national level for 24 years and won five German Championships (1959, 1961, and 1963-65). He played in 530 Bundesliga matches and scored 361 goals, with 568 points. He also earned 154 international caps, in which he scored 83 goals, participating in 3 A-Class, 4 B-Class World Championships, and three Winter Olympics, winning a bronze medal in 1976.
Köpf also played several seasons for Augsburger SV, EHC Freiburg and Berliner SC. In 1988 he was inducted into the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. His son Ernst Jr. also became an ice hockey professional.
