Phil LaBatte was really the first of the great college hockey players to come out of the University of Minnesota. He led his Gopher teams to three straight Western Conference championships and was captain of the team in 1934. He also played baseball while in college. After his 1934 graduation, LaBatte played on the 1936 Olympic team and then played some professional hockey in Chicago, Portland (OR), and Baltimore, although he never played in the NHL. He went on to officiate hockey for a few years; however, his main job was with the U.S government, working for several years in the interior department and later serving as chief of special services with the U.S. Veterans Administration.
